Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Solar Cell Crosses 30% Efficiency

A commercial-scale tandem cell has crossed the 30% efficiency barrier in certified testing, a threshold long thought out of reach for mass manufacturing.

A perovskite-on-silicon tandem solar cell has been certified at 30.1% efficiency by an independent testing lab, the first commercial-scale cell to clear a threshold researchers have chased for over a decade.

Why Tandems Win

Silicon cells are nearing their theoretical limit of around 29%. Layering a perovskite cell on top - which captures blue light that silicon wastes - lets the stack harvest a broader spectrum, pushing efficiency well beyond either material alone.

"Crossing 30% at commercial scale, not just on a lab chip, is the line that makes the economics flip," said the testing lab's director.

The Durability Question

Perovskites' historic weakness is degradation under heat and moisture. The certified cell uses a new encapsulation stack that survived 1,000 hours of accelerated aging with under 2% degradation - approaching silicon's longevity for the first time.

If manufacturers translate the result to gigawatt-scale production, the same land area could yield roughly 20% more energy, materially improving utility-solar economics.
