In the shadow of the AI revolution, a quieter but potentially equally transformative technology has been gaining momentum. WebAssembly (Wasm), originally designed to run code in web browsers at near-native speed, is rapidly becoming the runtime of choice for cloud computing.
The Container Problem
Docker containers changed software deployment forever, but they carry inherent inefficiencies. A minimal container image is 50-100MB. Cold start times range from hundreds of milliseconds to seconds. And each container carries its own operating system overhead.
WebAssembly modules, by contrast, are typically under 1MB, start in microseconds, and use a fraction of the memory. Cloudflare Workers, built on Wasm, can spin up a new instance in under 50 microseconds — roughly 1,000x faster than a cold container start.

"If Wasm had existed in 2008, we wouldn't have needed Docker," said Solomon Hykes, Docker's co-founder, in a now-famous tweet. Years later, his prediction is playing out.
The Ecosystem Matures
The WASI (WebAssembly System Interface) standard has reached 1.0, providing a stable platform for server-side Wasm applications. Languages with first-class Wasm support now include Rust, Go, C/C++, Python, JavaScript, and C#. The component model allows different Wasm modules to interoperate regardless of their source language.
For developers, the appeal is compelling: write in any language, compile once, run anywhere — browser, server, edge, or embedded device — with security sandboxing built in. The 2026 cloud landscape is rapidly dividing into two camps: teams running containers for complex workloads, and teams running Wasm for everything else.
